Local police are cracking down on underage drinking.

Their purge comes after teenagers have been found walking the streets during the early hours of the morning under the influence of alcohol.

Officers say the problem stem from a number of under 18s discos and parties held in Tenby and Narberth at various venues throughout the month.

"These events are attended by large amounts of local youths and while the events normally finish around midnight, youths, many aged 14-15-years-old, are found wandering the town up until 2 am," said Inspector Tim Hoad, of Tenby Police Station.

When the youths are spoken to, Insp. Hoad says they are very often under the influence of alcohol and vague on their travel arrangements home.

The inspector is now asking that parents ensure they identify what events their children are attending and that they make arrangements to pick up their children after the event has finished.

He said: "Many youths have stopovers at friends' homes. I would ask that the parents ascertain where their children are staying and that they are happy with the sleeping arrangements.

"I would also ask that their children are spoken to regarding the dangers of drugs and alcohol and that they do not supply their children with alcohol either at home before the event or give them alcohol for their night out."

The Inspector added: "There are a large amount of youths wandering around Tenby town in the early hours of the morning, over the weekend, who are heavily under the influence of alcohol. It is time for the parents of these children to take responsibility for their children's actions."

The police are taking positive action to deal with underage drinking.

Tackling Alcohol and Street Crime (TASC) is an initiative that is run every Friday and Saturday night in the Tenby area.

It involves officers visiting licensed premises and ensuring that the licensee is abiding by the conditions of their licence.

Police officers will challenge individuals who they think are underage and drinking in licensed premises. They will ask for ID and, if this is not forthcoming, that individual will be removed from the premises.

Positive action will be taken where underage drinkers are found to be drinking in licensed premises and the parents will be involved in this process.
