People will be aware that it is illegal to use mobile phones whilst driving.

Dyfed Powys Police in Pembrokeshire now believe there is an urgent need to educate the public on this issue and change attitudes.

First of all young people especially, routinely contact each other by mobile telephone calls and by text messages. If this happens when any person is driving a vehicle it is highly dangerous.

We need to stop and think.

Drivers should always consider turning their mobile off when driving.

Other people should stop and think 'If I call or text could the other person be driving at this time?'

"We now find that when we investigate road accidents the use of mobile phones is an increasing line of enquiry," said a police spokesman.

"We would much prefer to change attitudes than prosecute. However we are now to mount a campaign to target this issue through utilising new technology that is available including mobile cameras. This may mean that similar to speeding offences drivers do not have to be stopped, but prosecuted after the evidence is processed."
