Dyfed Powys Police are appealing for witnesses to an incident in Tenby whereby a male swimmer got into difficulties whilst swimming off the resort's South Beach. Twenty-three-year-old Deryn Rhys Telfer has been missing since lunchtime on Wednesday, June 25. Deryn had spent most of his life in Cardiff, but more recently he was from the Rhondda area. As reported in the Observer last week, Deryn was staying locally in a bed and breakfast, and was seen by his colleague and several other members of the public to enter the sea wearing just a pair of shorts. His intention was to swim to a buoy some way offshore and return, a swim he had completed successfully the day before. While his swim last Wednesday started off with no incident, approximately 150 metres out, he was seen to turn onto his back and wave one arm in the air. Witnesses horrifyingly then watched as he disappeared below the surface. Numerous '999' calls were received at the Operations Room at Milford Haven Coastguard from members of the public and immediately a full air, land and sea search was sparked. Tenby Coastguard Rescue Team and the South Pembs. sector manager, Mr. Dave Miller, the resort's RNLI all-weather and inshore lifeboats, a rescue helicopter R169 from Chivenor and Dyfed Powys Police were on scene within a couple of minutes and began carrying out extensive searches of the area, but sadly, no trace of the swimmer was found. The search was suspended on Thursday morning. Anyone with any information is asked to contact Tenby police on 0845 330 2000.
