THE story of Carry On star, Charles Hawtrey, is to be told in Tenby next week.

Eastgate Productions, in association with the Torch Theatre, will be putting on the poignant yet humorous look at the forgotten man of the Carry On series for Tenby and District Arts Club next Friday evening.

Written and performed by Dave Ainsworth and directed by Peter Doran, 'Oh Hello!' tells the tale of Charles Hawtrey, who became a regular of the Carry On series after a successful career on stage and in radio.

An eccentric and under-rated comedian, he felt that his status deserved a higher billing in the films and his fall-outs with Carry On producer Peter Rogers over billing finally resulted in his walk out in 1972, before ending his days as an alcoholic recluse.

The performer, Dave Ainsworth, meanwhile, studied at King Alfred's College, Winchester. He was a stand-up comedian for five years and has shared bills with Paul Merton, Jack Dee and Jo Brand and in 1999, his first comic novel, Silly Mid Off, was published.

The performance is being staged at the Community Education Centre, Greenhill Avenue, at 8 pm.
