Llangwm, for long the centre of fishing and cricket in the county, has now launched a festival - last weekend, on August 13 and 14, Lydstep-based Tony Curtis and fellow poet Grahame Davies appeared on Saturday in the Village Hall. Griff Rhys Jones was a warm-up act for them that morning and the festival attracted a large audience for most events.
Tony Curtis and Grahame Davies are two of Wales’s leading poets who have collaborated on several projects ranging from responses to the history and natural beauty of Gelligaer Common, to their sumptuous book of poems and photographs, Alchemy of Water/Alcemi Dwr, published by Gomer in 2013. They are currently working on poems to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Aberfan disaster.
Grahame read a selection from Lightning Beneath the Sea and new poems, while Tony read from his book on the area, Real South Pembrokeshire, and poems from From the Fortunate Isles: New & Selected Poems to be published in October. He included a premiere of a recent poem about the disappeared Pembrokeshire village of Pwllcrochan.
Tony’s family include Barrahs and Thomases and has Tally Ho farm in Llangwm as one of his roots in the county. His new Selected Poems will be launched on September 30 at Tenby Museum.
