Fielding a weakened team, due to injuries and half-term holidays, Narberth Under 14s put up a brave performance against their visitors from Chelmsford, Essex, on Sunday.

The home side withstood early pressure before surprising their opponents with a break out that saw the ball move quickly along the back line for their speedy full back to outflank the defence for the first try.

From the restart, Chelmsford renewed the offensive and it was not long before their number eight ran strongly to touch town under the posts.

The home pack was now coming to terms with their bigger opposite numbers to produce a more equally matched contest and, with their backs moving the ball at every opportunity, a second try for their fullback soon followed. This hard-fought lead was then squandered before the interval when some weak tackling let in the Chelmsford winger for a try.

Playing into the wind in the second half, the Narberth youngsters excelled themselves with a gutsy performance that saw them dominate territorially. They were, though, unable to breach their opponent's last line of defence and were caught out in almost the last move of the match when the Colchester winger sprinted away to bag another five points.
