Concerned staff and pupils at Tenby Junior Community School have called for members of the public to be more responsible when walking their dogs alongside the school's playing fields.
"The problem of dog fouling on our premises has been a cause for concern for sometime, but it has gotten worse since the summer," explained teacher Mr. Andrew Williams.
"People walking their dogs are perfectly allowed to walk alongside the playing fields on the public footpath, but the problem arises when the dogs are let off their leads and allowed to run free on our football and rugby pitches.
"When we have approached the people responsible, they have often responded quite rudely and not been very helpful in agreeing to clean up after their dogs. I don't think they realise how detrimental dog fouling is to people and the children's health," he continued.
One of the school's pupils, Jules Farrow, recently wrote to the town council on the matter:
"Our field is dangerous for us to play on because dogs have been allowed on our field without permission and we are not happy that dogs are not on their leads and owners are not picking up after their dogs," he wrote.
"We are not disallowing dogs in the Box Woods, just asking for owners to be more responsible."
After informing the police of the situation, the school received this response from Paul Amphlett, divisional commander of the Pembrokeshire division: "School premises are private places and the definition of premises extends to playing fields. In any instance where consent has not been given access to the premises, a person's presence may amount to trespass.
"There may be genuine confusion caused by a belief that general access to school fields is available to the public, but under the circumstances outlined in your letter, the school appears to be perfectly entitled to deal with these people as trespassers."
Mr. Williams hopes the public will respect the school's request to act more responsibly.
"I hope they take on board our concerns and keep the dogs off the fields, as it's not a very pleasant place for the kids to play on with this going on," he said.
