A major architectural award has been presented to the owners of an historic Pembrokeshire Dovecote. The chairman of Pembrokeshire County Council, Clr. Bill Roberts, presented the Green Apple Award to George and Francis Harries and their son Colin at the weekend. The family own the Dovecote at Rosemarket, which was recently restored in a major £17,000 project. The restoration won a Green Apple Award earlier this year for enhancing the country's architectural heritage. At a presentation on Saturday, Clr. Roberts praised the Harries family, and all those involved in the restoration work, for their efforts. "Dovecotes - only a few of which survive in Pembrokeshire - are some of our oldest buildings and it's wonderful to see the effort and care that has been put into restoring this reminder of our past," he said. "This Dovecote has been a focal point of the village of Rosemarket for almost 1,000 years - and is a symbol of the rich history of Pembrokeshire as well as of the village itself." The Rosemarket Dovecote was officially dedicated last summer following completion of the restoration project. The historic building dates back to the 11th and 12th centuries and has been a focal point of the village ever since. Originally linked to the Knights of St John, it has 200 nesting holes and was used primarily to supply meat to the Prior of Slebech during the Middle Ages, while later supporting the occupants of Rosemarket's Manor House - now long gone. Its restoration was jointly funded by Pembrokeshire County Council and Cadw with work carried out by Conservation Building Services Ltd. Workmen rebuilt the nest boxes using limestone similar to that originally used hundreds of years ago. Although the building is in private hands, it is open to the public at all times. The Green Apple Awards campaign is run by The Green Organisation, an independent non profit organisation that recognises and promotes environmental best practice around the world.
