A recognition scheme to award local individuals and businesses for helping with the reduction of single-use plastics in the resort is being set up by the ‘Plastic Free Tenby’ group.

Speaking at Tuesday night’s meeting of Tenby town council, Clr. Laurence Blackhall told members that the group were setting up monthly awards beginning from August, and that nominations could be presented to the group via its Facebook page.

Clr. Blakhall said that the ‘two-minute beach clean boards’ were arriving down by Castle Beach this week and that the time and date for the beach clean would be Saturday, July 28, meeting at the harbour car park from 11 am, to collect equipment to go out onto Tenby’s beaches.

He also reminded members that the performance on the North Beach by the Small World Theatre Group featuring the giant sea-faring puppet the ‘Cragen’ would take place at 7 pm on Friday, July 27, as part of the ‘Year of the Sea’ tour to raise awareness of the need to care for the coastal environment.

Tenby’s ‘liaison link officer’ Richard Brown ands Pembrokeshire County Council’s head of environment and civil contingencies, who was present at the meeting, told councillors that the authority was putting forward a bid for an ‘eco champion’ to work with existing environmental groups across the county, such as the ‘Plastic Free Tenby’ initiative.
