Two plaques were unveiled on Saturday at Hancock’s Yard, Maritime Museum, Front Street, Pembroke Dock, which is run by the West Wales Maritime Heritage Society.
One plaque was to commemorate the contribution to the society by Mr. Robert Kennedy and Mr. Peter Davison. Both men were founder members of the society in 1984 and their aim was to develop a maritime centre to preserve and promote the boating skills, the maritime history and encourage research into knowledge of the locality.
Unfortunately, both men passed away before their dream could be realised. However, their aims are being brought to fruition in Front Street.
The other plaque was the registered office nameplate of the Hancock’s Shipbuilding Company.
David James, secretary of the society, gave a short speech of welcome to Mrs. Ann Kennedy, Mrs. Pam Davison and Mr. Peter Hancock and Mrs. Margaret Hancock, together with members of their families and guests.
He briefly outlined the work of the society and its ongoing research, before inviting Mrs. Ann Kennedy and Mrs. Pam Davison to unveil the plaque recording their late husbands’ achievements.
Next, Mrs. Margaret Hancock was invited to unveil the Hancock’s Shipbuilding Company registered office nameplate. Since the maritime museum is on part of what was once Hancock’s shipyard, this gives continuity to the yard.
Liz Savill was kind enough to attend and play her harp before and after the ceremony.
Afterwards, all present withdrew to the yard boardroom for a glass of wine and pleasant conversation.
The museum will reopen when the school holiday begins, July 24.
