Discussions with Pembrokeshire County Council highway engineers are taking place with the aim to improve pedestrian safety in the centre of a seaside village.
County councillor for Saundersfoot’s south ward, Cllr Chris Williams said that he had been holding talks with the Local Authority to look at options to improve safety in the heart of the village
“Part of the discussions had been the potential for a new safer crossing point in the centre of the village, which would cover the area outside Cambrian Terrace and the front of the Harbour entrance,” explained Cllr Williams.
“Potentially the communication I have been given is that this crossing point would be far safer, as the majority cross there now instead of using the crossing point on Brewery Terrace. There will also be a shared walk and cycle path from the centre to link up on Sandy Hill Road.”
Recently, Cllr Williams said he’d continued to receive numerous reports of parking on pavements, double yellow lines, parking opposite busy junctions, as well as people parking in disabled bays without blue badges.
Cllr Williams said that he’d invited Rob Evans, Highways Infrastructure Manager to the village to look at the issues that have been brought to his attention during the busy summer.
“Whilst on a walk about, Rob noticed cars parked on the pavement on Milford Street, this has been happening for a period of time,” he continued.
“I have full sympathy for the businesses on this street as there isn’t a loading bay for deliveries. Lorries and vans are constantly parking during the day unloading the goods into the many businesses on that street.
“Instead of booking vehicles we need to explore having a working loading bay for the street, possible construction of a few bollards especially entering Milford Street on the right hand side. Rob certainly has to look at how we can improve this current situation, no one wants parking on pavements as this is dangerous and access should be available at all times.
“There are many disability groups in the village and navigating obstacles on the pavement is unacceptable. There is work needed on this street but I’m confident that we will find a solution when works are carried out putting in the two disabled bays in the autumn.”
Cllr Williams said that they also looked at the rear of the Cambrian Terrace, as there are no ‘left turn’ signs in place, with the potential for painted signs on the road, stating ‘right turn only - as recently a few cars have been seen headed in the wrong direction after parking opposite the arcade.
“There are also parking issues on Sandy Hill Road opposite the turning to Ragged Staff housing estate. Rob has passed this onto the enforcement team and already they have made an impact,” continued Cllr Williams
“While Rob was in the village we looked at two other sites which have been brought to my attention, firstly the hedge row at Brooklands Place. We walked the length and advised that he would put it in the diary for this to be cut back.
“Secondly we looked at the pavement going from Wogan Terrace, to the Strand passing the Hean Public House, as recently there have been a few slips and also a mobility scooter rolled onto its side throwing the gentleman onto the pavement!
“I look forward to Rob’s report on this and if any action needs to be implemented,” he added.
