Councillors in Tenby have raised concerns over a planned new ‘retro gaming lounge’ - in place of the former Poundland/Royal Gatehouse Cinema building - despite already recommending approval for the company’s signage on the front of the property at a previous meeting.

At the most recent meeting of Tenby Town Council this month, members discussed the application [Ref: NP/25/0713/FUL] for a proposed change of use of the existing building (Poundland) from (A1) to Retro Gaming Lounge (Unique Use), at the former Royal Playhouse Cinema, located on White Lion Street, alongside the Premier Inn.

When discussing the proposals, concerns raised by councillors included noise and parking, querying if these had been considered. Also, members said they were worried about the loss of retail to that part of the town.

They also heard that nearby residents had raised their concerns.

Councillors sought further information including clarification of opening hours.

Mayor, Cllr Dai Morgan proposed delaying a decision until further information had been received, with Cllr Anna Bolton seconding the proposal. All councillors were in agreement.

At the Town Council’s previous meeting in December, members recommended approval for signage for the proposed gaming loung, which will be called ‘CONTINUE?’ - when the application came before them [Reference: NP/25/0714/ADV].

A proposed non-illuminated sign on the front elevation of the building was moved for approval by Cllr Charles Dale, with Cllr James Phillips seconding the proposal. Four councillors abstained from the vote.

The views of the Town Council will be passed onto the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority who will determine the applications at a later date.

Poundland, which occupied the former Grade II Royal Playhouse Cinema building, closed permanently on October 18 as part of a nationwide restructuring by new owner Gordon Brothers.

The cinema screened its last film back in 2011, before Poundland opened in 2015.

The company behind the latest proposals for the building ‘Continue Arcades Ltd’ - have similar gaming lounges in Swansea, located on Princess Way, and also in Plymouth and Taunton.

Its synopisis states: ‘Welcome to Continue Arcades, where gaming dreams come to life! The go-to arcade destination, we offer a diverse selection of games and a vibrant gaming community.

‘Whether you're a seasoned gamer or just looking for a fun day out, Continue Arcades has something for everyone., offering a route back in time, high street escapism and endless fun.’

Some of the company’s lounges that are already operational feature - basketball, arcade tables, pinballs, retros, racers, shooters, retro consoles, pool, shuffle board, air hockey and more, with almost everything offering multiplayer options.

Interior alterations are planned for the building on White Lion Street, to follow the main design concept of an 80s space warehouse - with inspiration taken from 80s movies and games set in the future.
