A call to keep an ice cream sales area built without planning permission at a Pembrokeshire seaside village café has been given the given the go-ahead.

In an application to the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority, Bryan Batstone, sought retrospective permission for an extension to the existing fish and chip café to create an ice cream sales area and waste area on the west elevation, together with a new external pergola on the east side at 2 Marine Road, Broad Haven.

The works were completed last summer; the application supported by local community council The Havens.

An officer report recommending approval said: “The retrospective structure is considered to be well designed in terms of scale and siting and does not appear to be an incongruous addition to the host building.

“The application has received no third-party or public objections, and conditions have been recommended to ensure compliance [with planning policies].”

“The existing ice cream shop, shed, and pergola are considered to represent appropriately designed forms of development that support and enhance the visitor economy within Broad Haven, whilst remaining compatible with the character of the site and its surroundings.

“Officers are satisfied that the scale, design and siting of the structures are appropriate to their context. The use of sustainable materials, including timber cladding, assists in integrating the development into its surroundings and ensures that it does not result in undue visual intrusion or an unacceptable intensification of the site.

“The structures are considered to be proportionate and subservient to the principal building, thereby avoiding any overbearing or incongruous impact on the character and appearance of the area.

“No third-party objections have been received in response to the application, and the proposal has been supported by the relevant consultees, subject to planning conditions.”
