Plans for a summer house/garden shed in a wildlife and wildflower field in the grounds of a Grade-II-listed Georgian house in Pembrokeshire have been approved.

In an application recommended for approval at the July 29 meting of Pembrokeshire County Council’s planning committee, Dr Andrew John Williams sought permission for a wooden garden shed/summer house at Ty Rhos House, Wolfscastle.

A supporting statement accompanying the application said: “The proposed development is a garden shed which will be used both for the storage of garden tools and for leisure activities including reading, writing and observing wildlife.

“It will be sited in a field that has been developed during the past four years to encourage wildlife with the planting of trees and wildflowers and for the culture of fruit and vegetables. The field is within the curtilage of Ty Rhos House [a listed building] but more than 100 metres from the house and not within view of it.

“Ty Rhos House is ‘listed’ on the basis that it is a late Georgian House of interesting plan form with surviving fenestration. The proposed shed will have no impact on the heritage significance of Ty Rhos House The shed will be constructed using sustainable materials and will be supported on a ‘drybase’ system to avoid the use of excessive concrete.

“The shed will be sited in a position that does not require the removal of any of the trees that have been planted during the past four years. On erection it will probably be visible from the road [26 metres away] although this may not be so in a few years as the trees and shrubs recently planted grow.”

An officer report said: “The proposed development is compatible with the character of the area and the setting of the Grade-II-listed building and will have an acceptable impact on amenity in accordance with the requirements [of policies] and the Historic Environment Wales Act 2023, subject to imposition of a condition controlling the use of the building.”

The officer recommendation of conditional approval was moved by Cllr Brian Hall and unanimously backed by fellow committee members.
