Plans to reopen Haverfordwest’s Carpetright store, which closed in 2024, as another carpet store, submitted by the original founders of the brand, have been approved.

In an application to Pembrokeshire County Council, London-based Threadneedle Pensions Limited sought permission for a refurbishment of Unit C1, a former Carpetright store, Springfield Retail Park, Fishguard Road, Haverfordwest.

A supporting statement through agent Quod said: “Carpetright went into administration in July 2024, resulting in the closure of 200 stores nationwide, including Unit C1. The unit has therefore been vacant since November 2024. The enclosed application looks to bring forward modest refurbishment works to enable the retail unit to be re-occupied by Tapi Carpets & Floors (‘Tapi’), who are looking to improve their customer offer in the Haverfordwest area.

“The considered refurbishment works proposed will improve the site in line with the requirements of the incoming furniture retailer and bring a prominent retail unit back into beneficial use. The proposed works will allow the building to be refurbished to a high standard, which has been identified by Tapi as an excellent location and opportunity to expand their presence in southwest Wales. Refurbishment of the unit will ensure it better aligns with their modern trading format to secure its long-term occupation.”

It goes on to say: “Tapi Carpets & Floors is a prominent UK flooring retailer, established in 2015 by the Harris family. The company launched its first store in Tooting in May 2015 and quickly expanded, opening a flagship location on Tottenham Court Road in Central London by November 2016. Tapi acquired Carpetright in July 2024, bringing the Harris family back into control of the brand they originally founded.

“Following this acquisition, Tapi now operates over 170 stores nationwide, including 54 former Carpetright locations. This expansion has significantly strengthened Tapi’s retail presence across the UK, reinforcing its position as a key player in the flooring market.”

It says the nearest current Tapi stores are in Carmarthen and Llanelli, and the “modest external alterations” will see no increase in floorspace.

The application was conditionally approved by planning officers.
