A photographic trip down memory lane highlighting shoots where costumes from Griggles were used has been recalled by a character actor giving his thanks to the Tenby shop which is due to close its doors at the end of the month.

After providing fancy dress costumes and props to those young...and old enough to know better, for all occasions from Halloween to hen parties down the years, Roland Grigg recently announced his retirement after nearly 50 years at ‘Griggles’ on Warren Street.

John Price from Llanelli who has lived in Wales since 1973 has given his thanks after Griggles’ long standing association with providing costumes and props for theatre productions and photos shoots that he has been involved with.

“A lot of the photos using Griggles’ costumes found their way into adverts, one even on the side of buses in Sweden advertising bowler hats!” explained John.

“Others were used for book covers, whilst costumes were also used to make film clips etc.

“I spend a great deal of time in Saundersfoot and Tenby, and the photo shoots emerged purely by accident, after a chance meeting with two photographers from Llanelli.

“Since then I have done over 60 photo shoots depicting characters from film, history, stage, books etc, working with several photographers, some local to Tenby.

“The locations for the shoots have been many and varied, some studio based and others out and about. Some were even done on St. Catherine’s Island in Tenby, and some in the backstreets of the town late at night, and even in the mayor’s parlour!

“The success of the ‘characterisations’ have been in the attention to detail and working with excellent photographers who have a very creative eye.

“Having a theatrical shop like Griggles has been perfect for access to costumes, props and make-up and we owe a huge amount to Roland and staff for his help over the years.

“Roland was always extremely helpful and went out of his way to ensure we had the costumes we were looking for.

“He is a great man and I’m sure Tenby will miss Griggles,” added John.
