Police are warning members of the public to be wary of a possible 'phone scam.

Explained a police spokesman: "Persons purporting to be from BT are ringing 'customers' stating that their account is in arrears by £10 and if they don't pay straightaway, they will be cut off.

"They then go onto request bank/card details and personal information, including date of birth."

The police spokesman continued: "Sometimes the caller terminates the call midway to demonstrate that they can 'cut off' the 'customer's' line.

"Our warning is do not give any card/bank details."
