Nine-year-old Phillip Evans was announced the 2006 winner of the Lydstep Haven Caravan Park Annual Fishing Competition, last week.
Against all the odds, Philip managed to reel in an easy victory, beating his dad Billy Evans and his brother Ceri Evans, plus four other men. Despite his young years, Philip was the overall winner of the competition!
The group fished once a month off Lydstep Bay Beach. Every time a fish was caught, it was weighed, and the heaviest one won. The proud winner, Philip, had a first and two seconds.
"In jest, Philip's bigger brother, Ceri, was said to be 'gutted' and his dad made no comment," said Sharron Hardwick, a friend of the family. "Joking aside, Philip's family were all very proud of him, and were pleased to see him so happy over his victory."
The competition presentation took place on Saturday. Philip's grand prize was a Mitchell fishing rod and sea fishing reel, plus a rig wallet. He also won fishing headlamps and cash prizes, in earlier fishing sessions.
Philip has saved most of his cash winnings and plans to spend them on a family trip to Euro Disney.
