Whitland 1st XV 42 pts. Cwmllynfell 21

Whitland turned round an 18-7 deficit at half-time to run in six unanswered tries and finish as comfortable 42-21 winners in this enthralling Asda League divison one west clash on Saturday. It was definitely a game of the proverbial two halves, and whatever coach Domenic Setaro said to his team at the interval it certainly inspired them in the second period. Fullback Peter Thomas kicked Cymllynfell into an early lead following a penalty awarded for offside as the visitors had the best of the opening quarter of the match. It was Whitland who scored the opening try, however. After a good lineout and drive by the forwards, scrum-half Luke Marsh threw a poor pass, but fly-half Aled Davies scooped the ball off the surface and drew the defence wide before throwing a lovely inside ball to centre Lee Glanville, who came in on the angle to touch down. Davies added the conversion. Cwmllynfell hit back straightaway. When Aled Davies was caught in two minds and was penalised for hanging onto the ball, Thomas duly obliged by kicking the resulting penalty to make it 7-6. From the restart, outside-half Davies pulled his hamstring and had to leave the field, to be replaced by Ali Bowen. This meant Whitland re-jigging their back line, with Dion Thomas moving to scrum-half from the wing, Luke Marsh moving to outside-half and Bowen going out onto the wing. Some three minutes later, Whitland's man-of-the- match Phil Morgan was adjudged to have used his hands on the floor, which resulted in him receiving a yellow card. From the penalty, Cwmllynfell kicked to the corner, where Whitland knocked-on at the lineout. At the subsequent scrum, referee Simon Harris adjudged that the Borderers had stood up in the front row and awarded the visitors a penalty try, with Peter Thomas adding the simple conversion from in front of the sticks. The visitors struck again before half-time with a well-worked try by winger Andrew Luther. This time the try went unconverted, making the half-time score 18 points to seven, and leaving the home supporters wondering what was to come in the second half. After the all-inspiring team talk by coach Setaro, what a turn around was witnessed in the second half, with Whitland running in six converted tries. The first came after four minutes when Dion Thomas broke from the base of a ruck on the opposition 10-metre line, and his blistering pace took him past all the defenders to touch down. Luke Marsh added the conversion points. Within two minutes, Whitland came close again when Ali Bowen cut inside his opposite number, but couldn't quite make the line, and unfortunately the pass back inside to Phil Morgan went forward and all his good work came to nothing. After eight minutes, Whitland's forwards drove up the middle of the field, before replacement prop Richard Smith broke free and charged towards the posts where he was brought down short. Fellow prop Alun (Tank) Davies was in support and after he again was forced down within inches of the line, centre Matthew Hughes was on hand to pick up and dive over the ruck for the touchdown - his first of the afternoon - with Marsh again adding the convesion. Four minutes later, again after good work by the forwards, Luke Marsh was inches away with a drop goal attempt, but minutes later Peter Thomas levelled the scores with his third penalty to make it 21-all. From the restart, Cwmllynfell knocked on and from the resultant scrum, number eight Randall Williams picked up, missed out Dion Thomas and Luke Marsh, and passed the ball back inside to centre Matthew Hughes, who burst through for his second try, with Marsh again adding the two points. Six minutes later, Luke Marsh hoisted a high up- and-under which bounced high and backwards, straight into the hands of centre Lee Glanville, who, after a powerful run, touched down for his second try of the afternoon. Marsh was again successful with the conversion. With 10 minutes remaining, with the visitors attacking, there was a mix-up in midfield, just inside their own half. The ball went loose, Luke Marsh picked it up and, with nobody in his way, he ran in to touch down for Whitland's sixth try of the half. He also added the conversion to take his personal tally for the afternoon to 18 points and to make the final score 42-21 to the Borderers. Man-of-the-match: Phil Morgan.
