Drivers from Pembroke Haven and District (PHD) Autograss Club had a very successful weekend's racing in Round 2 of the British Autograss Series Championships, hosted by the neighbouring West Wales League at Lamphey last weekend.
In the hotly contested and crowd's favourite Class 7 (rear wheel drive saloons over 2000cc), the club had two cars in Sunday afternoon's final after impressive performances in the three qualifying heats on Saturday and Sunday morning.
With the top cars from all over the country competing, it took a brilliant drive from Noel James (St Clears) to take the win in his twin motor bike engined Peugeot, and not far behind in his similar twin bike engined machine in a fine third place was Dicky Lindsay (Tenby), making a superb return to racing this season after a lengthy lay-off.
With both Noel and Dicky picking up valuable points as finalists in the first round of the championships held at Whitechurch in Shropshire on June 9/10, they are well placed to challenge for the British title, decided over five events held throughout the country, with the final event scheduled for September 8/9 at Lincoln.
In Class 9 (1300cc-2000cc Specials), Wayne Llewellyn (Johnston) also drove superbly to see off the country's top cars to take a great win in his 1.8 litre Vauxhall 16 valve engined special, and with a sixth place in round one under his belt is also among the favourites for the Class 9 title.
In the Ladies Class 7 final, Hiefena James made it a hat-trick of wins for the PHD Club and a great family double as she joined husband Noel as Class 7 (Ladies) Champion after a faultless drive, while in Ladies Class 1, 16-year-old Marie Mason (Narberth) drove well in her 1000cc Mini to take fifth place in the final in her first season out of junior racing.
Many other PHD members just missed places in Sunday's finals, including another two of last season's junior drivers, Richard Davies (Haverfordwest) and Darren Mason (Narberth), who after impressive drives in round one of the championships had finished third and fourth, respectively, in the Class 1 final.
Two junior drivers competing in their first big event were Matthew Sawyer (PHD 21) and Rachel Dewhurst (PHD 68), both from Pembroke Dock, and look like champions to look out for in the future.
The PHD Club have not held any race meetings to date this season due to the foot and mouth restrictions, but the club will be holding a Fun Night, which includes raft races, duck race, tug-of-war etc. at Cresswell Quay on Saturday, July 7, from 5 pm, with the raft races at 7.30 pm.
Please support this event as it is hoped to make a donation to the Air Ambulance from funds raised.
