Tenby Town Council has launched a petition calling for public toilet facilities within the walled town to remain open all year round. Pembrokeshire County Council closed the public toilet facilities in Upper Frog Street on the grounds that compliance with health and safety requirements was too expensive. Meanwhile, the local authority sold the public conveniences located at South Parade to the Mid and West Wales Fire Authority, resulting in there being no toilets within or close to the main shopping centre of the town. The town council has been concerned about the lack of facilities and has recently been given the go-ahead by the fire authority to lease the toilet, but only for the summer. "Despite repeated requests to the local authority by town councillors to reconsider the matter, the county council believes that the town is still well- provisioned with public toilets with facilities at the multi-storey car park, Butts Field and The Salterns, as well as at the Castle, North and South beaches," said town clerk, Mr. Andrew Davies. "Tenby Town Council however whilst acknowledging these facilities maintains that provision is needed within the walled town and is therefore launching this petition calling on the county council to provide this much-needed facility," he added. The petition has been distributed around shops, cafes, pubs, and businesses in the town.
