A petition calling for an independent inquiry into the former Debenhams ‘Atriwm’ development in Carmarthen has passed 750 signatures and is now approaching 800.
Community campaigner Scott Bayes will present the petition to Carmarthenshire County Council’s Homes and Regeneration Scrutiny Committee on Thursday, November 12 at 10am at County Hall. The meeting is scheduled to be streamed online.
The petition calls for a thorough examination of how the project was developed, funded and managed. It asks for scrutiny of the project’s costs, changes to its scope, the decisions and authorisations made, procurement, the role of contractors and consultants, and the council’s arrangements for oversight and value for money.
A central concern is the reported increase in the project’s cost from £19 million to £42 million. Scott says the public deserves a clear explanation of how that increase occurred, what decisions contributed to it, and how those decisions were scrutinised.

Mr Bayes said: “The petition is now approaching 800 signatures. That shows how many people want clear answers about a major public project in Carmarthen.
“I’ll be asking the committee to support a proper, independent inquiry that establishes what happened and reports its findings openly. Residents deserve to know how the project’s costs changed from £19 million to £42 million, what decisions were taken along the way, and whether public money was properly scrutinised.
“This is about getting the facts on the record and making sure the lessons are learned. I look forward to presenting the petition to the committee on November 12.”
Mr Bayes is encouraging residents who are interested in the petition and the project to watch the committee meeting online.
