For 13 years, Carwyn James has not missed a day of school.

The 18-year-old left Ysgol y Preseli in Crymych this summer with a 100 per cent attendance record - on top of never missing a day while at his primary school, Ysgol Gynradd Crymych.

But Carwyn's perfect record is no one-off - for 100 per cent school attendance appears to be a family trait.

His mother Anne also never missed a day off school and neither did his late grandmother, Nellie.

And younger brother Aled shows every sign of maintaining the tradition with an unbroken attendance record to date.

The three generation perfect attendance is a record for Pembrokeshire - and possibly for Wales and the UK too!

"I enjoyed school because of the atmosphere, which in my opinion is unique to Preseli. You just get up and go don't you?" said Carwyn, who in his spare time enjoys farming, playing rugby and acting.

"I was honoured to be Head Boy in my final year, which made it very special for me. It's great to see your friends every day and once you reach the sixth from teachers become more friends than anything else. School is a happy place to be.

"I'm also very fortunate when it comes to my health, the odd sniffle is all I get!"

Carwyn, who is Welsh speaking, was brought up on the family farm in Crymych. His father died when he was young and he helps care for his mother.

Now awaiting his A-level results, he aims to take a gap year working in a local architect's office and helping out on the family farm, before studying architecture at university.

"His is a remarkable achievement in this day and age," said Clr. Huw George, cabinet member for children and young people.

"We hear so much about young people when they do wrong that we need to be reminded of how many of them achieve good things that are worthy of the highest praise," he said.

"Carwyn's school attendance record is to be applauded as is that of his brother, mother and grandmother. It's a family tradition of the highest order."

Carwyn's mother Anne achieved 100 pe cent attendance at Ysgol y Preseli and Ysgol Gynradd Crymych, while his late grandmother Nellie achieved the same distinction at her primary school held in Crymych Market Hall (before the present Crymych schools were opened).
