A former Pembrokeshire pensioner is stepping out on a 100-mile charity walk.

Margaret Davies, who now lives in Worcester, was born and raised in Pembroke Dock.

She attended Albion Square Junior School and Pembroke Grammar School before joining the Army in 1971.

Explained Margaret: “On March 12, I will be setting out on a solo 100-mile walk to celebrate the 100 years that women have officially been part of the British Army. I am doing it to raise the profile of the Women’s Royal Army Corps Association and to raise a total of £2,000 for the Women’s Royal Army Corps Association and Cancer Research UK.

“I have chosen to support both of my charities because I am a 65-year-old ex-officer in the Women’s Royal Army Corps who served as Assistant Adjutant with 22 Light Air Defence Regiment, Royal Artillery (The Welsh Gunners) and I am an ex-teacher who had to retire on ill-health following treatment for breast cancer,” she continued.

“When, post treatment, I suffered panic attacks and a crisis of confidence, it was the comradeship and support offered by members of the Women’s Royal Army Corps Association which helped (and still helps) me fight the demons that a life-threatening illness can produce.

“I have also chosen to raise funds for Cancer Research UK as without their work I would not be alive.”

Margaret will start her walk on March 12 at the Women’s Royal Army Corps Association plot at the National Memorial Arboretum, Alrewas, Staffordshire.

Using the canal towpaths of the Trent and Mersey, Birmingham and Fazeley, Coventry, Oxford, Grand Union and Stratford Canals, she will finish on March 18 at the Stratford-upon-Avon canal basin in time for the Women’s Royal Army Corps Association AGM and a 100-year celebratory dinner.

“Thank you in advance for your interest and generosity. Be assured that all funds raised by my walk and its supporting activities goes directly to my two chosen charities as I am entirely self-funded,” added Margaret.
