Among matters discussed at a recent meeting of Pennar and Bufferland Community Association were the following:
Arrangements for the Pembroke Dock bicentenary celebrations: Clr. Maureen Colgan outlined the arrangements that the Pembroke Dock bicentenary celebrations co-ordinating committee had made to date. On New Year's Day, there would be a convivial get-together and 'brunch' in Pater Hall between 10 am and 1 pm. On the evening of January 1, an interdenominational service and Songs of Praise would be held in Bethany Chapel, Pennar. On Wednesday, May 14, to commemorate the founding of Pembroke Dock town, there would be a very special event at which it is hoped a member of the royal family would attend.
A new supermarket coming to Pembroke Dock: In reply to a member's question about the future of the old Silcox car showrooms site, Clr. Tony Wilcox said that work on the new Aldi supermarket building was due to start quite soon and be completed around Easter time. In reply to a further question about the former Spar store in Treowen Road, he said he could not say whether there was any intention of locating a 'takeaway' on the site.
Lower Pennar residents' hopes for the reinstatement of a former children's play area: At an earlier meeting, residents of Grove and Castle Streets had presented a letter to the P&BCA requesting that the green amenity area at the western end of Grove Street should be reinstated as a children's play area. During the past two years, the land had been used as a horse paddock! Clr. Tony Wilcox said that he had spoken with Mr. Barry Cook (PCC estates manager) and he had decided to set-up a meeting between representatives of Pembrokeshire Housing, the P&BCA and a resident from the Castle Street/Grove Street area, and from this meeting it was hoped that a way forward could be found.
Land at the western end of Military Road is soon to become a village green: Clr. Tony Wilcox said that he understood that the land would soon be finally declared to be a village green, and that the work of bringing it up to a clean and safe place for peoples' recreation can begin. After a thorough inspection and removal of any accumulated rubbish, the mowing of the long grass and marking out of games pitches can go ahead.
The setting up of the Neighbourhood Watch in Pennar and Bufferland: Ron Selby (secretary) said that he had recently received Neighbourhood Watch door and widow stickers and pamphlets advising householders on how to keep their property safe from unscrupulous intruders, and he would be distributing them in the Springfield Road and Imble lane area over the next week or so.
