Among matters discussed at a recent meeting of Pennar and Bufferland Community Association were the following:
Treasurer's report: Clr. Maureen Colgan said that she was very pleased to report that she had received a cheque for £200 from the PCC Housing - Customer Liaison, and that the P&BCA funds had a credit balance of £457.16.
St. Patrick's Community Hall appeal: Clr. Tony Wilcox said that the community hall committee had decided to apply for a grant from the Big Lottery Fund to help with the raising of the estimated £30,000 needed for the external repairs to the community hall and surrounding pathways. The appeal had raised over £3,000 so far, and it was hoped that future events in the hall would increase that figure.
An initiative that could raise money for St. Patrick's Community Hall: Shirley Johns suggested that holding a Sunday market in the community hall might make a useful contribution to the restoration and maintenance of the hall. Clr. Tony Wilcox said that the idea could be looked at in more detail at a later date.
Yet more reports of crumbling road surfaces around Pembroke Dock: Besides the previously reported holes appearing in the surfaces of Treowen Road and Milton Terrace, a member mentioned that the service road for Argos, Brentano and B&Q was breaking up very badly.
Clean-up operations in preparation for the bicentenary celebrations: Commenting on an item in the previous month's minutes when it was suggested that the teachers in the schools around Pembroke Dock should instill in their pupils the importance of disposing of their food wrappers, drink cans, bottles, paper and general waste in the receptacles the council have so thoughtfully provided, Clr. Maureen Colgan said that the town council was trying very hard to get the message across to the public, but they were finding it to be a difficult undertaking.
Replying to the complaint about the amount of litter lying on the pavements either side of Pembroke Road, especially during the Bush School term, Clr. Tony Wilcox agreed that the area was often in need of a serious need of a cleaning-up, and he asked the secretary to write a letter to the headteacher on this matter.
Commemorating the North Atlantic war time convoys: Clr. Maureen Colgan spoke of her visit to the Royal Navy mine hunter vessel HMS Pembroke when she paid a courtesy visit to Pembroke Dock. The event was arranged to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the North Atlantic convoys that carried vital war materiel to the Russian port of Murmansk. After the Pembroke Dock visit, HMS Pembroke will undergo a refit, and then will be on duty in the Arabian Gulf area for the next four years.
Too many incidents of vandalism around the local golf course: Despite regular checks around the South Pembrokeshire Golf Club and course by the PCSOs assigned to the Pennar area, there continued to be repeated acts of vandalism to marker posts, flags and to the greens. The secretary read out a few of the incidents from the 2010 report on the matter. Incidents such as the theft and damage to flags etc. and the riding of a mini motorcycle on the greens were happening then, and many of these offences were continuing to take place. Members heard of the proposal by the PCC rights of way department that the pathways around and across the course might be rerouted to reduce these confrontations!
Future fun and games treats for Pennar children?: Clr. Maureen Colgan suggested that the children's fun day or some similar event should be reinstated this year. Maureen said that the pig roast of previous years would still be popular with children and adults alike.
