A fun day held at the Carmarthenshire County Council run Pendine Outdoor Education Centre has raised over £1,000 for charity.

The event was held last Wednesday to contribute to a target fund of £5,300, which centre staff hope to raise for Children Today.

Children Today is a national charity that operates on a local level to help buy vital equipment for children with sickness or disabilities.

A sum of £600 was raised last Wednesday, with a further £600 donated by Barclays Bank who agreed to match the day's total pound for pound.

Among the activities which took place during the day were a car boot sale, raffle and a number of 'come and have a go' challenges which included the opportunity for visitors to try abseiling, archery and a zip wire.

Carmarthenshire County Council chief executive, Mark James, said: "I'd like to thank all the centre staff who gave up their time to raise money for such a worthy cause. I wish them all the best in their efforts to reach their target."

Pendine outdoor education centre manager, Gethin Williams, said: "The day was a success with a good sum of money raised. With the support of Barclays Bank we have been able to add £1,200 towards our target for Children Today."

Rob Seymour, manager at Barclays Bank, Carmarthen branch, said: "At Barclays, we are committed to communities and we are delighted to be able to work with our local community to achieve something which we hope will make a real and lasting difference."

A total of £2,500 has been raised towards the overall target following the festivities, with a number of other events planned in the near future culminating in a six-day sponsored endurance challenge in Western Cape, South Africa. Staff from the Pendine centre are looking for sponsors to support their trip to ensure they reach their target.

The team have paid for the trip themselves and all money raised will be donated to Children Today.
