A team of Welsh BTEC ND Health students from Pembrokeshire College, Haverfordwest, have won the top prize at the European Science Week in Florence (November 5 to 11).

They were awarded a very impressive trophy by the European judges for their presentations on a range of scientific projects on pollution and bioluminescence, at the international meeting arranged by the Da Vinci-Darwi-Linnaeus initiative.

A party of teachers and senior and junior students travelled to the meeting with the Darwin Science Festival and joined groups from Italy, Sweden and Russia for workshops, lectures and presentations.

The Welsh team were awarded a second trophy for a project by Georgina Campbell and Elouisa Carter on Lactose; both students attend the Stanwell comprehensive school.

Not to be outdone, the junior pupils from the Mary Immaculate School, Haverfordwest, received a bronze Crest science award from Professor Mario Pazzaagli (University of Florence) for their project on green slime.

The party also managed to fit in a whistle-stop tour of the sights of Florence.
