Two Tenby students are set to embark on a trip to South Africa this summer to help teach primary school children.

Courtney Cramb from Saundersfoot who is a current sixth former at Ysgol Greenhill and her friend Harvey Oakley from Carew, a former pupil at the Tenby secondary school, are currently raising funds so that they can help the families they will be meeting and teaching English, Maths and also sports coaching for the children.

“The children haven’t had any form of normality return since the beginning of the virus outbreak and many have had to stay home and look after families or go to work to earn money for them,” said Courtney.

“We have all seen how much it has impacted our lives but in a country like South Africa, which faces many other challenges, it has been terrible.

“School to these children is a break and some fun so we’re hoping people will help us bring it back to them!” she continued.

“The children unfortunately do not get the opportunity to play sport within their school day as it is not part of the educational curriculum, this is due to low funding and resources.

“Helping teach them English and Maths will make a huge difference to the children as not many of their teachers are fluent in English and their Maths is limited. We want to help make a difference in the children’s day-to-day lives.

“This opportunity will create lasting memories for us and be a trip of a lifetime, whilst also helping to provide education and fun for the children involved.”

In trying to raise £1,500 for their trip to Port Elizabeth, Courtney and Harvey have set up a raffle at Saundersfoot’s Tesco Express store, with nine prizes to be won. People can enter on Facebook or in store and the raffle draw will be made on April 2.

The duo also have a ‘gofund’ me page at: gf.me/u/zfu2cj

Additionally, Courtney and her seven- year-old sister Mali are walking, running or riding 6km a day throughout the rest of March to raise money

“These families face hardships much greater than ours, but these donations will help so much,” continued Courtney.

“All of the money we raise will be put towards this trip and buying supplies and essentials to take with us for the children such as tops, pens, toothbrushes etc. Any donations will be greatly appreciated.”
