On Monday, Tenby County Club (sponsored by LG Leisure) played host to the Conservative Club from Milford in their latest Premier League clash. The first frame saw Mark Cleevely take on Lee Frost. Mark started slowly, missing a few balls and, unfortunately for Mark, Lee was potting them, leaving Mark no chance. Lee won convincingly. The second frame saw Steve Cook take on Barry Mathias. Steve started cautiously (obviously looking tired after a long day at work) and soon found himself some 13 points down. His opponent was clearly finding some form after a poor season, which Tenby didn't want, particularly at this crucial stage, with them needing every point they can muster to avoid relegation. Steve was obviously suffering and after a foul on a red, he let his opponent in for a 27 break. Steve was now 49 points behind with it all to do, and another in-off practically handed Barry the frame, which the Conservatives eventually won again convincingly. The third frame saw Martin Durham take on John Roberts. Martin started well, opening up a 24-point lead, only for John to come back to take the lead by 20 points. This game eventually went down to the pink and black, which Martin took to reduce the frame score to 2-1. The fourth frame saw club steward Malcolm John take on John Reynolds. Malcolm was out to prove a point after being convincingly beaten the previous evening, and he was a changed player, battling for everything. Malcolm was finding some superb form and opened up 20-point lead, but John is no mug and came back at him (could Mac's experience outwit his opponent?). This was answered shortly after, as coming to the colours, Malcolm was some 21 points up, although with just the blue, pink and black left his lead was down to 10. A couple of fouls by John, however, put Mac in firm control and, with his opponent now needing snookers, he duly went on to win - well done Mac. The last frame saw captain Glyn Davies take to the table against Adrian Mathias. Glyn started well, opening up with a 16 break, quickly followed by two further breaks of eight, to go into a commanding lead. Then, as has happened all too often this season, the wheels fell off his game! Glyn's opponent battled back and it was down to the pink, which the Milford Cons man took to win a very close game.
CUP EXIT
The previous evening, the club had played host to the Black Rabbit Club in the quarter-final of the Jimmy Allen Cup, and were losers by 32 points. The format for this cup is two singles and two doubles, with aggregate scores to count. The first frame saw the singles match-up of Steve Cook and Gareth Aries. Steve started cautiously, but a slip-up let Gareth in to open up a 10-point lead early on. This frame looked like an all-in battle, as both players were contributing to some excellent safety exchanges. Steve then took a temporary lead of five points, before Gareth again extended his advantage to seven points. Steve was having a tough frame, but he hasn't got a 93 per cent average this season through luck. Steve was then unlucky to go in-off to let Gareth back in and, coming to the colours, was two points behind. With just the pink and black left, however, Steve had managed to get his nose in front again and he took them to give Tenby a 15-point advantage. The second frame saw the pairing of Glyn Davies and Martin Durham against John Lloyd and Brett John. Glyn and Martin started well, opening up a small lead, which they kept until midway through when John and Brett battled back to close the gap. Then some excellent safety by both Martin and Glyn, coupled with some good pots, saw the Tenby pair extend their lead to 22 with only pink and black left. John Lloyd then potted both balls to lose by nine points, leaving Tenby now 24 points up on aggregate. The third frame saw another singles, with club steward Malcolm John taking on Mike Dearden. Mac started cautiously and needed to be on his best form to beat or even keep the score down to a minimum. Mike then opened up a 25-point lead to give Malcolm some problems. But Malcolm is made of stern stuff and never gives up! He battled on, but to no avail, eventually losing by 41 points, This meant that the aggregate score was now 17 points in favour of the Rabbit. The last frame saw Mark Cleevely and Darren Morgan take on Andrew Smith and Mike Roberts. Mark and Darren started slowly, but soon opened up a lead of 26 points and, with Tenby only 17 points behind, things were looking good. However, things were about to take a turn for the worse as the Rabbit boys started to grind the Tenby pair down with some good pots. Coming to the colours, Tenby were five points down and 22 points overall. Mark and Darren battled on bravely, but again it was to no avail, eventually losing by 15 points and 32 points in total.
