As part of the annual Tidy Wales Week, four exciting and practical clean-up events have been organised within Pembrokeshire. On Thursday, June 28, Keep Wales Tidy, Pembrokeshire Coast National Park and volunteers from Brawdy Barracks will be clearing beach rubbish which has accumulated over a number of years in the ruins of a cottage at Porthmynawyd, near Newgale. The following day, local Coastcare groups have organised beach cleans at Marloes Sands and Lindsway Bay, with any additional volunteers welcome. On Saturday, June 30, Neptune's Army of Rubbish Cleaners (NARC) Coastcare group will be carrying out an underwater clean-up at Stackpole Quay. Last year, 30,000 people of all ages did their bit to clean up their neighbourhoods and as a result many longstanding litter blots on the landscape were removed. The week of action resulted in over 11,000 bags of litter being recovered by volunteers at almost 500 locations. This year the organisers hope that at least 50,000 people will be getting their hands dirty. To assist groups to take part, Keep Wales Tidy have produced 1,000 free clean-up kits. Sponsored by Visit Wales and Environment Agency Wales, the kits are available to anybody wanting to take part in the campaign and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. They contain posters, promotional items, tabards, local authority contacts and a booklet explaining how to organise a busy and fun event. Tegryn Jones, chief executive of Keep Wales Tidy, commented: "People constantly complain about the state of their streets, beaches and rivers. We are now offering them help and support to do their bit to make Wales a cleaner, safer and tidier country. "It costs £40 million to clean up our waste and rubbish - money that could be better spent building schools and hospitals." Over 450 events have already been planned by groups across Wales; amongst them are underwater clean-ups, canoeists litter-picking riverbanks, a large-scale clean-up of Caerphilly Castle's moat and many large partnership events.
