'Champions of Aberystwyth' is the new and richly deserved title of Pembrokeshire Panthers U14 girls team. The girls, drawn from the Pembrokeshire Football Coaching Centre, battled it out with teams from all over North and Mid Wales last week in the Ian Rush Football Festival, which is held each July in Aberystwyth. Coached by FAW football development officer, Gerry Rigby, and assisted by Welsh U19 women's player Carrie Slack, the girls performed magnificently. Although the age group was under 14, most of the girls were two or three years younger than this, and were often playing against players almost twice their size, but showing their superior skills and not a little bravery and determination, they remained undefeated throughout, scoring 29 goals with just two against. The squad was wonderfully supported by all the parents, and also by local businesses, including Chevron, Milford Haven Port Authority, Haven Insurance, and Wrekin. The girls plan to go on to form an U16 squad which will take part in a new West Wales league for the coming season.
