The British Isles Championships is an annual event in the Short Mat Bowls calendar. The tournament is hosted in turn by England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man. This year it was Wales' turn and the tournament took place on November 21 and 22 at Llandrindod Wells.
Every year, Pembrokeshire has several bowlers in the Welsh team. This year there were nine altogether - Neil Crawford, Gareth Davies, Martyn Davies, Jon Gladstone, Andrew Hudson and Paul Hudson (Hook), Mark Thorpe (Freystrop), Andrew Evans (Tavernspite) and Robert Hughes (Penally).
There are two parts to the competition – the individual championships consisting of teams of singles, pairs, threes and fours and the team championships consisting of four teams of fours.
This year, Wales won the fours in the individual championships with a team consisting of Neil Crawford, Jon Gladstone and Robert Hughes from Pembrokeshire and Nigel Thomas from Llanboidy club in Carmarthenshire.
Andrew Evans was runner-up in the singles and a team from Swansea were runners-up in the triples. Wales came third overall in the team championships.
It was an excellent weekend of bowling and the Pembrokeshire players did us proud!
