The guest speaker at February's meeting was John Stewart-Smith from Mathry, who in the 1960s flew every mark of the Lightning fighter and was also a production and test pilot at Wharton.

John began his RAF career as an apprentice at Cranwell college before transferring to pilot training. He explained that the Lightning was built for research but because of its tremendous performance, was put into production and squadron service. With his witty resume of his flying experiences enhanced by slides and his pilots log book for all to see, the evening passed all too quickly for the capacity audience.

Next month, there will be a committee meeting at 6.30 pm with a general meeting following an hour later. The guest speaker will be Ron Hicks, of Milton, who flew 50 operations in the B-25 Mitchell, finally retiring from the RAF in 1968.

As usual, meetings will be held in the terminal building at Haverfordwest Airfield on March 11 and guests and new members are made welcome. Call (01437) 781540 for more information on the group's activities.
