A remarkable young carer from Pembrokeshire has been recognised on the national stage after winning a prestigious ‘Young Shining Star Award’ at Action for Children’s annual Stephenson Awards, held at a special ceremony in London.

Meghan Smyth, a dedicated young carer and A-level student from Haverfordwest, who helps care for her disabled sister Mia was honoured for her resilience, compassion, and commitment to supporting her family while continuing to thrive in her own life. The Young Shining Star Award celebrates children and young people who go above and beyond in the face of challenging circumstances.

The glittering ceremony brought together inspiring young people, carers, and supporters from across the UK to recognise outstanding achievements and stories of courage.

Meghan’s nomination highlighted her unwavering dedication as a young carer, balancing her responsibilities at home with her education and personal development. Judges praised her positivity, kindness, and determination, which have made a profound difference to those around her.

Speaking after receiving her award, Meghan said: “I feel really proud and surprised to win this award. Being a young carer can be tough sometimes, but I just try to do my best every day. It means a lot to be recognised, and I hope it shows other young carers that they’re not alone and that what they do matters.”

Vikki Phillips, services coordinator for Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire at Action for Children, added: “Meghan is an exceptional young person who truly embodies the spirit of the Young Shining Star Award. Her strength, compassion and quiet determination are an inspiration to everyone who meets her.

“At Action for Children, we are incredibly proud to support young carers like Meghan across Wales. This award shines a spotlight on the vital role they play and the resilience they show every single day.”
