Over 700 people turned up to this year's Sport Pembrokeshire Awards last Friday.

Folly Farm was packed yet again for the popular annual award ceremony, which celebrates the efforts of the county's sports men and women - as well as the volunteers and sponsors that keep grass roots sport growing.

Hosted by Sport Pembrokeshire - Pembrokeshire County Council's sports development arm - this year's awards attracted more nominations than ever this year across a wide range of sports.

Awards were presented in a wide variety of categories.

Among those recognised was ex professional footballer and now BBC Wales commentator Ian Walsh, who was born in St. David's.

The former Crystal Palace player, who also played for Swansea City, Barnsley, Grimsby Town and Cardiff, was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award.

Father and son sports enthusiasts Steve and Richard Young were awarded the Chairman's Special Achievement Award for Richard's determination and commitment to sport.

Richard, who swam from Tenby to Caldey for charity last year, is assisted by dad Steve, who not only gets involved in swimming, football and other activities, but also promotes music as a way of instilling confidence in those with a disability.

This year a special award was also presented to local sports personality Bill Carne.

Bill, who reports on sport for Radio Pembrokeshire and also runs his own sports website, was awarded The Voice of Sport in Pembrokeshire Award.

Clr. Rob Lewis, cabinet member for sport and leisure, said the event recognised the hard work and effort that went into sport in Pembrokeshire.

"We have a very high standard of award winners, including several national champions," he said.

"The rise in nominations every year and the increasing number of sports represented reflect the depth and range of sport played in our county."

Ben Field, manager of Sport Pembrokeshire, said the success of the awards scheme was due to the hundreds of coaches, parents and volunteers that kept community sports clubs going week in, week out throughout the year.

"It's community sport at its best," he said.

"We should also recognise the commitment of the main sponsors, including Valero, Western Telegraph, Folly Farm and Radio Pembrokeshire."
