The Pembrokeshire Football Coaching Centre commenced trials last week to create squads of local youngsters to take part in this new football initiative. Organised by FAW trust football development officer, Gerry Rigby, the centre will be run in association with Swansea City, and will deliver weekly quality coaching provision to talented local primary aged players. The centre will be based at Tenby astro and will operate on Monday evenings starting in September. The trialists have all been recommended by either the primary schools or their clubs and will all have the chance over the next two weeks to demonstrate their ability to the selectors. Gerry Rigby, FAW football development officer, said: "Every school and every club in Pembrokeshire has been given the opportunity to recommend their best players across the age group from five to 10, and this gives us the chance to select the very best from the groups. "What is vital to understand however is that players of this age improve at an enormous rate, and even if they do not make the squad now, in a few months time they could well be ready. "It is therefore our policy to offer ongoing trials to these players once the centre starts in September. All the coach or school needs to do is to contact me and I will arrange for the player to come in for a trial period." Phil Thompson, Texaco public relations manager, said: "We are delighted to be associated with this new initiative. For the first time, local primary children will have the opportunity to be coached in a professional manner right here in Pembrokeshire. "They will not have to travel up and down the motorway because Swansea will be coming here at regular intervals. The most talented will have every opportunity to progress to the highest levels without having to travel out of the county." Lyn Thomas was equally delighted saying: "Swansea City is very happy with this new centre. We recognise that there is a lot of emerging talent from this area, and we want to be a part of this new association. "Any player wishing to have a trial with Swansea City from now on will have to come recommended through this new centre. I am sure that it going to be very beneficial for all, not least the young players from Pembrokeshire." For further information, Gerry can be contacted at County Hall on 01437 776379.
