Last Tuesday saw members of Girlguiding Pembrokeshire gather at St. Mary's Church, Tenby, for a service to celebrate the handing over of the county standard from the retiring County Commissioner, Mrs. Nicole Evans, to new County Commissioner, Mrs. Ruth Best of Wolfscastle. Guiders, girls and friends were welcomed by the Rector of Tenby, Rev. David Jenkins, who spoke warmly of the movement, and of its involvement with St. Mary's over the years. County president, Mrs. Kathleen Phillips led the congregation in prayer, and readings were given by Mrs. Evans and Mrs. Best. Tenby Guides sang beautifully, including in their repertoire a particular favourite of Mrs. Evans, 'It's ever so much fun being a Guide with you', which really summed up the friendship, fellowship and fun shared by the members of this very special movement. The county standard was then symbolically handed over to Mrs. Best, who led the members in a renewal of their promise. This was followed by the singing of the wonderful 'Scout Hymn' played, of course, by Mrs. Pauline Allen. The service was followed by sumptuous refreshments in Church House, and thanks must go to Ellen Powling, Althea Shaw, Christine Moore, Barbara Pegg and Margaret Peake for all their hard work. Mrs. Evans thanked everyone for their support, particularly the Rector and Dr. John Harrison for playing the organ. She also thanked all her friends in Guiding for helping to make the last five years so memorable. The county president, on behalf of the county, then presented Mrs. Evans with a beautiful Graham Hadlow painting in recognition of her five years service, and with two lovely pieces of Portmeirion. The three Division Commissioners then got in on the act by presenting Mrs. Evans with a giant chocolate medal - much appreciated! It only remained to congratulate Mrs. Best on her new appointment, and to wish her well for the next five years. They promise to be very exciting as they will lead up to the celebration of the centenary of the Guiding movement in 2010. It was good to welcome friends from Scouting to the service, including the marvellous Mo Crockford, and it was good to see many people lingering to chat, and enjoy the warm and friendly atmosphere. If you would like to be a part of this worldwide movement, and feel you would like to put something back into our community, why not give Guiding a try. We have waiting lists of girls, but not enough leaders, so don't delay. After all, in the words of Tenby Guides' song, it could be 'ever so much fun being a Guide with us '!
