Children going to Pembroke Comprehensive for the first time in September have enjoyed a special event designed to make the transition easier. The Year 6 pupils have been taking part in NIFTY (Neat Information for Today's Young People) at Pembroke Dock Youth Centre. Over four days, more than 250 children from the Pembroke Family of Schools enjoyed various skill workshops and film-making opportunities. There was also an information bus and a 'market place' where children could find out information from partner agencies. The feedback from pupils, teachers and learning support assistants was very positive and the children were invited to write their opinions about their day on a 'thought wall'. Clr. Islwyn Howells, cabinet member for children, young people, Welsh language and Learning, said: "These events, which were piloted last year, have proved to be a most successful way of preparing Year 6 pupils for the transition in their schooling from primary to secondary. "A day of activities and workshops among mixed groups representing several primary schools enables a bonding, and can help to take away the often underlying fear of the unknown on entering a higher education school." The event was arranged by Pembrokeshire County Council's Children and Youth Action Team. Co-ordinators and youth workers Damian Golden and Phillipa Lindsey said the aim was to complement the transitional work undertaken by teachers and other professionals from Pembroke Comprehensive School. "We would like to thank the representatives from the agencies, the staff at the youth centre, the children and teachers themselves and everybody else who assisted us, for their hard work and commitment in making the four days as successful as they were," said Damian.
