A message from the president of the Pembrokeshire Agricultural Society, Dennis Reed: It is my very great privilege as president of the Pembrokeshire Agricultural Society to extend a very warm welcome to all of our readers to the society’s annual County Show at Withybush on August 16, 17 and 18.
I consider myself to be extremely proud, honoured and lucky to hold this great office. Without doubt the greatest honour that I have ever held.
I am lucky and proud because I not only represent my family but also the South Pembrokeshire area for the first time since Roscoe Howells in 1987.
I am also very proud to be Welsh and in particular Pembrokeshire born and bred.
I have recently holidayed in Canada which is a truly beautiful country with its endless snow-capped rocky mountains, thousands of acres of pine forested valleys and picturesque lakes. But it is no more beautiful than our beloved Wales with its variety of magnificent countryside and coastline. I feel so very fortunate and grateful to live in one of the most panoramic areas of Pembrokeshire with a sea view to die for. I have a lovely garden which I call my paradise where I can spend the best part of my time which I find so satisfying and therapeutic.
And to top it all, with my daughters Georgina and Lois as my escorts I am president of one of the very finest agricultural societies in the country. We extend to you all the very warmest of welcomes to ‘our Countryfile’ condensed into three days, August 16, 17 and 18. A must for all ages from grandparents to youngsters. When you will witness the finest breeds of cattle, horses, ponies, sheep, pigs, goats, dogs and poultry, exhibitions of vintage tractors and machinery displays of the finest art craftwork, photography, flower arrangements and all facets of horticulture. Great entertainment in the form of top class show jumping, Shetland pony racing and further attractions in the form of the Kangaroo Kid, the Monster Truck show and Titan the Robot.
One of the great features of the show is the social aspect, meeting up with old friends and relations, some of whom you have not seen since last year.
The weather governs the success of the show, especially on the financial side.
To run such an enormous ‘three day event’ the costs are extreme and therefore sponsorship is paramount, and hugely valued.
Once again on behalf of the society, a very warm welcome to you all, have a great time and thank you so much for your continued support.
