On the back of a very successful Euro 2016 for Wales and after a very positive Welsh Schools’ FA annual general meeting recently, Pembrokeshire Schools’ FA are delighted to announce that they are able to increase the number of county representative sides for the forthcoming season.
An exciting new initiative is taking place which sees Under 8s, Under 9s and Under 10s playing in Welsh Schools’ Festivals against other County Schools’ Associations. These will be held on a monthly basis, with each area association hosting a festival.
The Under 11s side will continue to play in the prestigious Tom Yeoman Festival - which they came so close to winning last season - while the Under 12s, Under 13s and Under 15s will play competitive football in the Welsh Schools’ competitions.
These matches are of a very high standard, with academy players being released to represent their school association. In the past, top players like Joe Allen, Dylan Rees, Liam Cullen and Tom Dyson have all played for Pembrokeshire Schools.
Last season, Swansea players Ewan Watts, Macs Page, Oscar Miles and Jacob and Luc Owen joined the other very talented players in the squad to play for Pembrokeshire.
Pembs Schools FA has very good links with Martin Evans (head of recruitment for Swansea City and vice-chair of Welsh Schools FA) who is keen to release players to play schools’ representative football wherever possible. These matches attract scouts from professional clubs.
Players for the squads are selected from pupils who go to school in Pembrokeshire. The squads are open to both boys and girls, although Pembs Schools is looking to run a Girls’ Under 13s squad in the 2017-18 season.
