Campaign group ‘Solidarity with Palestine Pembrokeshire’ has criticised the County Council’s inaction decision on divestment.
Campaigners have called for the Local Authority to join other West Wales authorities in calling for its pension funds to be divested from companies profiting from genocide.
Speaking after the meeting at County Hall on March 5, a spokesperson for the campaign group slammed Pembrokeshire Council’s ‘inaction’ as Palestinians face genocide, even as 11 Welsh councils commit to divestment.
“Pembrokeshire Council vote to do nothing about pension divestment despite a resolution from Cllr Alistair Cameron and a petition from the public,” said the spokesperson.
“The debate at Pembrokeshire County Council was a stark display of moral failure. While Palestinians continue to face genocide, and while residents here in Pembrokeshire demanded that our pension funds stop investing in companies complicit in that violence, councillors chose to do nothing.
“This wasn’t a fringe request. It came from a public petition, from Solidarity with Palestine Pembrokeshire, and from a clear resolution put forward by Alistair Cameron.
“The ask was simple and principled: Divest our pensions from companies enabling the destruction of Palestinian lives. And yet, Pembrokeshire refused to act, even as the rest of Wales moves forward.
“Across the country, 11 Welsh councils have now pledged to divest, recognising their responsibility not to profit from the machinery of occupation and mass suffering.
“The most recent, Rhondda Cynon Taf, voted to divest the night before Pembrokeshire’s debate. Momentum is building everywhere. Except here.
“Pembrokeshire had the chance to stand with the growing Welsh movement for ethical investment. Instead, 31 councillors chose silence, delay, and moral evasion. But our community is not giving up.
“We will continue organising, educating, and demanding that our institutions refuse to bankroll genocide. Pembrokeshire deserves leadership with a conscience and we will keep pushing until we get it,” they added.
