Pembrokeshire Care, Share & Give finished seventh in the nationwide Febreze Freshness Champions Contest, a recycling contest to see which UK collector could save the most air freshener and home care product waste from landfill. They thank the Pembrokeshire community in helping them finish seventh in the contest and claim the charity donation prize which will be split between several local Pembrokeshire charities.

A staggering 1,451 used air freshener and home care products were collected by the non-profit charitable organisation and the wider local community during the four month contest, which ran from November 15 until March 15. Overall, during The Febreze Freshness Champions Contest, a total of 48,062 air freshener and home care products such as plastic air fresheners, air freshener refills, trigger heads and flip top caps from home cleaning products and flexible cleaning wipes packs were saved from UK landfill by collectors nationwide. The contest winner was the Ellie’s Fund charity from Scarborough with the Women’s Aid Charity Shop in Grimsby finishing runners-up.

Whilst the products and packaging Pembrokeshire Care, Share & Give and their supporters have collected for TerraCycle’s Air and Home Care Recycling Programme are technically recyclable, UK councils simply do not have the infrastructure to recycle this type of waste and so traditionally it is needlessly ending up in landfill. This prompted Febreze and recycling experts TerraCycle to join together in 2014 to launch an innovative solution for UK consumers in the form of the Air and Home Care Recycling Programme. Through the recycling scheme initiated by TerraCycle and its partner Febreze, people all over the UK can now recycle any brand and sizes of air freshener and home care products and packaging such as plastic bottle caps and plastic trigger heads for flexible home cleaning wipe packaging, pumps and caps for home cleaning products, plastic air freshener packaging, and plastic air fresheners and air freshener cartridges. The scheme encourages consumers across the UK to help end this enormous waste of resources, with the result of turning waste into everyday products such as watering cans, garden benches and waste bins.

Amanda Absalom-Lowe from Pembrokeshire Care, Share & Give commented: “We are delighted to have finished seventh in the nationwide Febreze Champions Freshness Contest, and the £55 charity donation we won in the competition will be donated to local charities. We would like to thank all the local people who helped us to win the contest by dropping off their air and home care waste back to our collection points. We will continue to recycle4charity and help our community and thank you all for your support.”

Even though the contest has now ended, local people are asked to keep dropping their waste air freshener and home care products and packaging such as plastic air fresheners, air freshener refills, trigger heads and flip top caps from home cleaning products and flexible cleaning wipes packs back to any of their clearly marked collection boxes at:
