The Pembrokeshire Autograss Club (PAC) recently held their annual dinner and presentation at the Cleddau Bridge Hotel, Pembroke Dock, which was full to capacity with members, sponsors and guests.
Following the four-course meal and cup presentation, the night got into full activity with comedian/singer Micky John Bull from Western-super-Mare; this was fully supported with a disco.
It has been a fantastic year for the PAC Club, who hosted round two of the British Autograss Series at their home at Hayes Farm, Hodgeston, near Lamphey, by kind permission of brothers David and Jonathon Harris, which attracted nearly 650 drivers, and was hailed as one of the best autograss race meetings of the year.
With over 150 PAC members, some represented the club in the British Championships and the PAC Club can again boast two British champions, including Nathan Rees from Johnston, Haverfordwest, who races in men's class six with a Nissan Micra.
Nathan and his dad prepare the car themselves and his engine is expertly prepared and tuned by Exon Race Engines. Nathan and his followers had to wait until the final had finished in the final round of the British Autograss Series at York, in September, to know that Nathan had achieved and taken the British title. The points were so close that it ended up with who won the final. Nathan's recent rival and who was actually ahead before the York final was Y821 Chris Mullen.
As the bungee went, these two very talented drivers were fighting it out, with both taking the lead on several occasions, but by the last lap, Nathan had got in front and with his driving skills maintained the lead until the chequered flag, and was crowned British Autograss Champion for class six.
Michaela Bevans was PAC's other 2009 British champion for the third year running. Michaela races in the super saloon class seven of autograss and won the title after round four of the British Championships. She was consistent in the championships, always finishing in the top three, with her rivals challenging her from Southern Ireland, the West Midlands, Manchester, Kent and York.
Rob Corbett, PAC 3, nearly had PAC's third British title and again it was down to the final round. Rob races a 1400cc Micra, again prepared by himself to a very high standard, and his engine built by MVJ, who came and supported Rob at the PAC dinner.
At the end of the championship, Rob came second in the British in a very competitive men's class four.
Other PAC members who contested the British Championships were George Bagley, Will Elford, Dalton Thomas, Mathew Sawyer, Darren Jones, Raymond Morgans, Chris Jones, Steve Brown, Gary Rees, Martin Roberts, Caroline Jones, Luke Jenkins, Tom Roberts, Alice Bevans and Rhys Roberts, who all achieved some great individual performances.
Moving onto the National Autograss Championships, held by the Radford Autograss Club, the wether was atrocious, but the PAC members represented the club very well, with Rob Corbett leading the final in class four, only for the dreaded red flags to come out and unfortunately Rob was unable to go in the re-run.
Moving onto the Ladies' and Junior National Championships held in St. Neots, Cambridgeshire, only two juniors attended, Alice Bevans and Alex Rossiter, who obtained good heat results, but unfortunately just failed to get into the top 32, with both of them finishing in the top 40 out of over 120 competitors for their class.
With the ladies, four very experienced drivers took part, with Emma Lewis PAC222 in class one obtaining a third, fourth and fifth in her heats, and Caroline Jones PAC24 in class seven, who just missed out on a final qualifying place, but watch out next year when her new car is out.
Paula Rees-Williams PAC57, driving her brother Nathan's class six, nearly became national champion. Paula had two heats wins and a fifth to qualify for the final and was winning the final at the first attempt, but unfortunately the race was stopped just before the last lap flag. On the re-run, Paula did not get her usual fast start and was back in sixth position, but with some excellent driving and passing manoeuvres, she picked off nearly all the drivers and crossed the finish line in second, only inches behind Josie Cox from Essex.
Michaela Bevans raced two cars at the Nationals and went to the championships determined to do one better that last year. In class seven, she achieved two heat wins and a second and come final time, she drove her 1500cc Suzuki Hayabusa powered Mini to its maximum and, after a close battle for the first few laps, pulled ahead and never looked back.
In her other class, she drove her boyfriend Dan Mackenzie's open wheel class eight machine and entered the final in joint top qualifying position with three heat wins. Here Michaela did not have her quick start and had to improve her position with her experienced driving and finished in third place.
Tony Rees, chairman, thanked everyone for all their help and support during the 2009 season which has been a very busy but excellent year for the PAC Club. He also expressed his gratitude to his fellow officials and concluded with a toast to the Pembrokeshire Autograss Club.
The other toasts were proposed by Helen Corbett for the sponsors and by Laura Donahoe for the supporters of the club.
