At a time when dairy farmers are obliged to supply milk at less than the cost of production and no viable markets can be found for this year's potato crop, the annual Pembroke Farmers Club show continues to thrive.

This week again, under the presidency of Mr. David (D. R.) John, fully enjoying a superb summers day out, crowds in record numbers gave their support to what is fast becoming an increasingly popular town and country event.

Heading the horse and pony entries was Mark Meyrick on his seven-year-old grey Working Hunter Pony Galway Blazer, with reserve being taken by Heather Vaughan with Orielton from the Riding Pony Breeding section.

Taking supreme from the well supported cattle classes were Paul and Janet Williams with their 26-month-old Limousin bull, Marchgwyn Exclusive, from their young herd of a dozen pedigree animals.

Keen interest amongst YFC members and young breeders won them several awards, including for their handling skills.

Fresh from his successes at the Royal Welsh Spring Festival 12-year-old Owain Jenkins - fully supported by dad and mam, Ian and Jane -produced the winning Mountain exhibit in the sheep section from his Penni Bach Jacob flock numbering 17 breeding ewes and their 19 lambs.

Edward and Betty Morris reported that the growing fur and feather section is full of surprises and drew in 140 exhibits with a new children's pet area providing two coloured rats. Ken Williamson took best with his three-year-old white Call duck male and David Picton- Jones was placed reserve with a yearling Bard Rock male.

The horticultural, flowers and rural craft marquee has expanded rapidly over recent years to become a major part of the event. During the awards ceremony, Tony and Carol Thomas presented a trophy - in memory of their late son, Richard - to the winner of the under 16 art competition, Sophie Jones, of Monkton School.

Utilising the modern facilities at the nearby Village Hall, lunches were made available for show officials and judges courtesy of South Pembrokeshire Young Farmers Club members.

During the luncheon, the club chairman, Rachael Hughes, made the presentation of a cheque of £1,000 to the Wales Air Ambulance service who were represented by Mike Ashbridge.

After the show, the YFC arranged the usual dance at The Pavilion on the former Carew Airfield.
