Murder and mayhem was in the air, as well as a virtual duel, taking place at Pembroke Probus Club's February lunch meeting at the Cleddau Bridge Hotel.
Guest speaker for the day, Pembrokeshire Life editor, Keith Johnson, took as the theme for his talk, Pembrokeshire murders. It seems a few good murders go down well and there were plenty of them for listeners to dwell upon.
Over 50 members listened raptly as murder after murder was wheeled out by Keith. Happily, most were hanged for their crimes. One at Haverfordwest, others at Carmarthen, Swansea and one made it all the way up the M4 to meet his doom at Execution Dock, London.
One almost murder which was a duel took place next to the site now occupied by the Pembrokeshire County Council building in Haverfordwest. It was between Sam Fortune and John James in which Fortune fired his pistol in the air and James then shot and wounded Fortune who was carried away from the field of honour and later died.
The vote of thanks was given by Tom Pearce, a former president of Pembroke Probus Club much admired for his beautiful voice.
Afterwards, 35 members sat down to a first class carvery lunch much enjoyed by all.
The president's dinner for members, family and friends takes place on Friday, February 17, with a very special guest entertainer all the way from the National Arboretum in Staffordshire.
Next luncheon will be on Tuesday, March 6, when the guest speaker will be a former governor of Turks and Caicos Island. Further details from the speakers secretary, telephone 01646 683708.
