Pembroke Probus Club held a members' luncheon meeting on Tuesday, August 2. Attendance was relatively small owing to holidays and illness. Only 30 members and guests sat down to a very tasty carvery lunch, although a larger number were present for the talk.
The guest speaker for the occasion was Philip Carradice MA, well-known writer and broadcaster. Members were regaled with tales of the rugby matches he had 'enjoyed!' with some of the Welsh immortals, among them Barry John, Phil Bennett, JPR and Gareth Edwards, and how he was once a walkover physically, as well as metaphorically, by the burly Alan Martin.
There were many whimsical stories, too, of his time in Pembroke Dock and his career in teaching. Philip once taught at a school for criminals in Brentwood. One of his classes of five pupils included two murderers and a rapist. Other tales of his time as headmaster of Headlands Special School, Penarth, were just as illuminating to members. He finally retired from the teaching profession to become a full-time writer and currently hosts a history series on BBC Radio Wales entitled The Past Master.
The vote of thanks was given by Bryan Phillips, former chairman of Pembrokeshire County Council, himself a former local rugby player.
