The curtain came down on Pembroke's festive activities last Friday evening when Pembroke Town Council held a reception at the Town Hall to present prizes to the winners of the shop window competition and the Christmas quiz.

Clr. Keith Nicholas, who is also chair of Pembroke Chamber of Trade, thanked the council and their electricians for all their hard work as the town had enjoyed a wonderful Christmas display.

He added that it was fantastic that the whole town worked together to make Christmas such a success and hoped that this would continue throughout 2009.

Before presenting the prizes, the Mayor, Clr. Gareth Jones, endorsed the comments and stated that Pembroke was not immune to the current economic downturn. Therefore, it was imperative that all organisations continue to work together to entice the public to visit and shop in Pembroke.

The quiz competition, consisting of 40 questions based largely on Pembroke, was won by Mrs. Anne Phillips, with Mrs. Kathryn Jordan and Mrs. Pauline Charlett joint runners-up. However, none of them managed to answer correctly the town clerk's first name which remains a closely guarded secret!

The prestigious shield for the best shop window was won by Forget Me Not (florists) for a very effective display, full of light and beauty which conjured up the feel of Christmas.

Lucy Kenniford, proprietor, said: "Everyone at the shop is very pleased with the result as it was a real team effort."

Wisebuys were runners-up, with The Room, Pretty Woman, The Card Shop, The Cutting Room, and Stems highly commended by the judges.

Town clerk, Hugh Colley (William) commented afterwards that a great deal of time and effort had gone into arranging the various events, but the large number of compliments received from members of the public had made it all worthwhile.
