Members of the Pembroke Town Heritage and Environment Group (THE) Litter Pickers launched an exciting new leaflet for both visitors and residents of Pembroke on Saturday.
The Pembroke Nature Trail is a bilingual leaflet developed by the group with local artist Lisa Hellier who carried out the attractive design.
The THE group led the planning and development of the leaflet, but it was very much a community project including children from Golden Grove Community School (Ysgol Gelli Aur), volunteers from the Pembroke Millponds Action Group, members of the local branch of the Wildlife Trust, the Tabernacle URC group, Pembroke’s Wednesday Club Friendship Group, residents from Holyland Lodge, volunteers on the Pembroke Story heritage project and many others involved with the Pembroke 21c Community Association.
The leaflet sets out a walking trail around the town’s Commons, Millpond and Castle Pond with detailed drawings of the wildlife and biodiversity to look out for throughout the seasons. It links all these sites and encourages walkers to stop, look and get to know their natural environment.
“Developing the leaflet was lots of fun and hard work,” said Nikki Anderson, who chairs the THE and led the project. “It provides a new and innovative way for people to look at their town and will enhance the experience for visitors to Pembroke. We wanted to link the number of local projects being managed by Pembroke 21C groups including the Millponds Local Nature Reserve, Holyland Woodland, and the two burgage plot gardens along the Commons. We hope it will also link with the new Pollinate Pembroke project by raising awareness of the wealth of wildlife there is in this small town for people to enjoy.”
The leaflet was funded by the Big Lottery Awards for All Wales programme and another leaflet is planned in 2016, Junior History Detectives, which is being prepared with children from local schools.
