Pembroke Town Council is proud to announce its new dog watch/signage scheme.
The council is working with lead public health officer, Steve Morbey, and the county’s dog warden team to try a new approach to combat the huge problem of dog fouling in Pembroke.
At a well advertised but rather poorly attended public meeting, the team unveiled the high visibility jackets that will hopefully be worn by the new volunteer dog wardens.
This is not a new idea and has previously been piloted by a Freshwater East team and a similar team from Saundersfoot.
Willing and public spirited dog owners are asked to don these jackets when they walk their dogs out and about in Pembroke.
The jackets have the words ‘Volunteer Dog Watch’ emblazoned on the back.
Whilst the volunteers walk their dogs, it is hoped that just by being a visible presence will be enough to deter irresponsible dog owners.
The volunteers will carry bags and offer them to anyone they think could be in need of one.
In conjunction with this scheme, there will be new anti-dog fouling signs.
These signs were designed by Mr. Owen James, of Pembrokeshire County Council, town clerk of Pembroke, Mrs. Suzie Thomas, Clr. Mel Phillips, Steve Morbey, and Ruth Edwards, one of the dog wardens.
These signs will be erected in places where dog mess is particularly prevalent.
If any member of the public who was absent from the meeting, but should like to recommend that these signs be placed in certain areas, please contact Mrs. Suzie Thomas at the Town Hall, where poo bags will also be shortly available to purchase.
Also, if you are a responsible dog owner who wants to wear a ‘High Visibility’ jacket whilst walking your dog, please make yourself known to Suzie or Mandy (assistant town clerk) at the Town Hall.
They will make sure that your jackets are waiting for you!
